Peace of Mind: A Guide to Make the Church A Shelter for Those Seeking Peace of Mind

Picture
Dear Church Leader,

We are so grateful to have the opportunity to partner with you in serving the Body of Jesus Christ. It is our desire that our guide will equip you in edifying each member, so that each may come to prosper in mind, body and spirit. We are especially hopeful that these resources will support your church in becoming a shelter to those who seek peace of mind.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and all over the world communities will mobilize to raise awareness, end stigma and point persons to hope of recovery and healing. We pray that this guide will support your team in planning its participation in this worldwide initiative. Even more importantly, we hope your team will use this guide to start or continue the process of cultivating a climate that proactively promotes mental wellness, as well as acts compassionately and responsibly to point persons to life changing and saving help.

This guide has been reviewed by a mental health expert, Cheryl A. Burton, DSW, LCSW, to ensure that it will in fact fulfill the purposes for which it was made.

This guide includes the following:

1. Basic definitions and facts pertaining to mental health.
2. Ideas for raising awareness, ending stigma and pointing people to hope within your church community.
3. A Place to Start: Practical suggestions for implementing ideas in your community immediately and over
   time.
4.
Guidance to support community members in creating their own Peace of Mind Self-Care Kit, to include
    printables.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Sinclair McCalla

This is a very useful and well thought out resource, and I trust that churches will take advantage of it to assist their congregants who are looking for peace in their lives.  This document, if used as suggested, certainly has the potential to meet its goals:

1. Raise awareness
2. End stigma
3. Point to hope.

"A Place to Start" is a critical component of this  resource, because it can be very overwhelming to know where to begin.  This kind of support is what is needed for anyone caring for the mentally ill and their caregivers.

The included resources, such as "The Best Movies About Mental Health", "Peace of Mind Self-Care Kit", along with the section entitled "Get Your Word", are well developed with practical applications. The step by step instructions encourage and facilitate leaders, as well as individuals, in being proactive about mental health.

This guide emphasizes the relationship between the spiritual and emotional, showing that they are not mutually exclusive, but work to complement each other.

Thank you for dedicating your time and efforts to the development of this wonderful resource from which we can all benefit.
