A Schedule for Sleep

Healthy sleep is essential for a healthy life. Last week we considered the benefits and characteristics of healthy sleep. Today, and over the course of the next 3 weeks, we will share tips to support you in embracing the benefits of healthy sleep.  This week's tip is to establish a schedule conducive to sleep.  The National Sleep Foundation recommends creating a routine that gradually prepares you for sleep, by reducing exciting and potentially stressful stimuli.  Some of its suggestions include taking a warm bath or shower, reading a book or engaging in light stretches. (The National Sleep Foundation). Below is our recommended schedule for the hour before you go to bed:
  1. Have a warm bath or shower. Consider enhancing this routine by using all natural soaps with calming scents, e.g. lavender, vanilla, valerian and jasmine. (The Best Scents for Relaxation and Sleep). Approximately 20 - 30 minutes.
  2. Have a well steeped cup of herbal tea. The following herbal teas have been shown to encourage restorative rest: chamomile, turmeric, valerian root, Lemon balm, lavender, ginger, cinnamon and peppermint among many others. (What is The Best Tea for Sleep, Insomnia and Nighttime Anxiety?). Approximately 10 - 15 minutes.
  3. Pray The Daily Examen. Conclude your day, as David found it so helpful to do, by meditating and thoughtfully focusing on God on your bed in the night watches. (Psalm 63: 5 - 7). Use this guide to engage this practice: The Daily Examen Guide.​ Approximate 15 - 20 minutes.​
