Raise awareness. End Stigma. Point to Hope.
You need counseling...the message rang clear in all kinds of ways and in every kind of place. All of a sudden, the various blogs to which I subscribed converged to bombard my mailbox with a single witness: counseling is for you too. People I just met would skip over the small and safe talk of erratic weather patterns of the east coast and go for, "It really is so important that we take care of ourselves-that we do the hard work of healing-so we don't end up in unhealthy entanglements with others." And I found myself canceling meeting up with a group of women with whom I believed God was giving me the okay to build community, in order to sit in ear shot of the lyrical prowess of the poet Lyrical Faith Poetry, as she made it clear that her faith in God enabled her to walk through her counselor's doors every week.
I moved slowly towards the surrender that ushers unto obedience, through the act of continuous prayer.
Prayer: God, if it is your will that I go to counseling, please confirm so.
Prayer: God, could you confirm your sign? Amen.
Prayer: God, since it is your will, help me to desire it. Give me courage to enter it.
Prayer: God, since it is your will that I go to counseling, please direct me to the right counselor.
Prayer: God, is this the right counselor?
Prayer: Give me the courage to show-up and the faith to believe you will too.
Prayer: God, you know why you have brought me here, let our work together be what you've had in mind.
Prayer: God, give her the wisdom to speak into my life with good and eternal effect.
Prayer: God, let me be humble to hear what you have given her to say.
Prayer: God, give me the faith to stay, even as it goes slowly.
Prayer: Help me to walk without fear into the night of past hurts, knowing that you will never leave me nor forsake me, and that I visit these dank places helped.
Prayer: Help me to continue to show up fully.
Prayer: Thank you for this time, place and person.
Prayer: Let the beginning, middle and end be conducted by your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, come on in the room.
Perhaps you are ready to take that step of obedience too. We spoke to Christian Counselor, Lynette Hector, LMFT, on how to select the right counselor. See what she had to say!
