Do you know that there is a call on your life to lead? Yes, on your life.
I think any of us, in earshot of the news, or alert in our homes, neighborhoods, places of worship, businesses, nations and generation, knows that there is a crisis in leadership. There are many people trained in elite institutions. Many people carrying a string of impressive credentials as additions to their given names. Many people with years of experience in their fields. Many people with large platforms. Many people with titles engraved on plaques they can prominently display. Yet, all this training, credentialing, experience, and exposure have not resulted in the leadership that pleases God.
Psalm 78: 72 provides insight into the current crisis. It is the last verse of the ancient Hebrew hymn declaring God's faithful and generational leadership over His people Israel. It reads, "So David shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart; And guided them with his skillful hands." (AMP). Through, prophets, judges, and kings the Almighty had worked to deliver His people from danger, into His safety and establish them in their God-given mandate to be fruitful and multiply, rule and subdue the earth. (Genesis 1: 26 - 28).
Through King David's leadership, the LORD sought to reveal Himself as the One who leads with uprightness of heart and great skill. Of course, David failed to do this perfectly. He didn't always partner with God. Yet, we have Scripture's witness that He was a man who returned to God; who made Him His refuge; who feared Him; and desired Him sincerely. He was a man after God's own heart, and it was this quality that made him a leader who applied his training, credentials, experience, and platform to influence a generation for God's glory. (1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22).
The crisis in leadership is a heart issue. It is also an educational issue. Nothing proves the latter point more than our response to the crisis. We hear the reports, see the abdication of responsibility, feel the misuse of power and authority and lament. Lament has its place. It is right and wise to grieve what is broken. But lament is not where the people of God are called to park. Could it be that the thing that grieves you most is the thing God wants you to change? Could the greatest grief of your life be a call to serve-a call to lead, right where you are?
Yes, we need to be skilled-so go to school, take that internship, serve an exceptional leader! But if that is all we ever learn we will find ourselves without the knowledge necessary to see how God has actually made us an answer to prayers prayed generations before, or by your neighbor who utters her grievance in your very presence. We need to know our God and to take hold of the reality of who He says we are. We need to enroll in The King's University and learn how to govern our spirits, establish the boundaries of our hearts and live well between His pleasant lines. (Psalm 16).
It is our heart to see women embrace the power of the gospel in the area of leadership and equip God's daughters to rule and subdue the territories over which He has already given them authority, i.e., in their personal lives, homes, work, local churches and communities.
