I Am His Beloved Child

On October 23, 1987, I made my noisy entrance into the world. And only a few weeks later, I found my forever home with a God fearing woman who had prayed earnestly for a child. Even before my lungs expanded to take in their first breath, my mother was expending mind and resources to ensure that she would one day have the privilege of calling me hers and I, the privilege of calling her mine. And as God had ordained it, so it was: I became her daughter and she my mother.  As my mother she assumed certain rights and responsibilities. Amongst these rights and responsibilities, was that of naming me. Desirous of a beautiful singing voice with which to praise God, but not finding it amongst her many God given treasures, she prayed--long before she met me--that she would have a child with a melodious singing voice. In faith she named me Carolyn, meaning song of joy, expectant that God would honor her request. As her daughter, I too assumed specific rights and responsibilities. I became a part of a family and heir to her wealth (tangible and intangible).

Adoption is such a perfectly beautiful illustration of God's redemptive work. He, like my mother, had longing for us long before we knew there was anything more to long for. (1 John 4: 10). He, like my mother, did not spare expense to draw us unto Himself. He brought us near by the blood of His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. (Romans 8: 32
). He purchased us so that He ALONE would have the right to name us. And what did He call us? He called us His dearly loved children. (Ephesians 5: 1).

He calls us what we are by virtue of our position in His beloved Jesus Christ--children of God sealed by His Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 1: 13). And as His children we are privilege to His perfect care. We are able to rest in His precious promises of faithful provision for everything needful for the abundant life to which He has called us in Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 1: 20). As His children we have the privilege of His eternal protection. (Ephesians 1: 13 - 14). As His children we have the sacred pledge of His eternal love. (John 15: 9). As His children we are heirs with Jesus Christ and heirs of God--being made privy to all the splendor of the heavenly riches the Father has shared with the Son. (Romans 8: 17). As His beloved children we have the liberty to pursue a life of righteousness by His Spirit, living in defiance to the tyranny of sin, with every act of love fueled obedience (sanctification). (Romans 6: 12 - 13 & Romans 6: 19 - 23). As His children we have  the expectant hope of living in the fullness of His glory, in the absence of sin (glorification). (2 Corinthians 3: 18).

Oh, how splendid it is to know our true names! How precious it is to be called the Beloved of God! May we come to grasp the depths of His tender affection and power towards us who believe on Him. (Ephesians 3: 17 - 19). May we come to live as He has called us to--as beloved daughters of the Most High God.
