Read |Psalm 91:1, CSB|Everything that could be shaken was shaken in 2020. The trials and testing of the year brought our idols crashing to the floor. Did we rely on our impeccable planning, predictable circumstances and outcomes to make our way secure? Did we rely on a steady job to establish in us a sense of purpose? Did we rely on our savvy financial choices to protect us from future calamity? Did we cling too tightly to a loved one, placing on them the burden of guarding our way and securing our sense of wellbeing? If yes, the whirlwind of 2020 proved our investments foolish. And as the sound of their demise echoed through the air and fear sought to grasp our hearts, we desperately searched the Scriptures. As the earth beneath our feet gave way, we remembered our God and clung dearly to His promises. Perhaps none as dear as the one made in the 91st Psalm:“The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.”(Psalm 91:1, CSB). My fist is clenched firmly around this promise. I have read, meditated, studied and declared it. And I have noticed that the promise of Psalm 91: 1 is only made available to me when I let go. When I let go of any claim to self-governance. When I let go of all my known ways of self-protection. When I let go of my own understanding. When I acknowledge Him in all of my ways. (Proverbs 3:5). I must let go of the throne of my heart and go under. I must go under the protection-steadfast care of the Most High. I must allow Him to reign on the throne of my heart. I must bend my knee (in public and private) to Him. I must submit my beliefs, thoughts, emotions and choices to Him. I must humble myself in acknowledgement of the truth that the LORD is God and that it is He who has made me and not myself. (Psalm 100). I must go under in order to receive His protection. I must let go of control and walk this life as one led by His Holy Spirit. When I live life this way-by His Holy Spirit-I live my life at the center of His will. And His manifest presence is right there-at the center of His will. And it is this Presence that is inviolable-against which no forces of the enemy may ever prevail. This is the anchor for all the rich promises of protection that follow. (Psalm 91: 2 - 16). We are protected when we allow our “I”s to be hidden in Him.
